The NHS Gambling Service is opening a new clinic in Greater Manchester.
The facility at Salford Quays will reach out to thousands more people across the North West and surrounding areas dealing with a gambling addiction.
There be experts on hand to to give advise and deal with mental health issues.
In England around 224,000 adults (0.4% of the population) are classified as higher risk problem gamblers, with around two million (3.6%) classified as being “at risk” from developing a serious gambling problem.
However, fewer than three per cent of those affected currently receive treatment or support.
The NHS Northern Gambling Service first opened in September 2019.
The new North West of England clinic is part of commitments made in the NHS Long Term Plan to tackle gambling addiction.
Gambling addiction is a new public health crisis. I’ve seen the harms that problem gambling can cause people. However the chances of recovery from addictions like problem gambling can be very good with proper treatment.
Gambling Treatment Services
Since 1987, SASC has operated a problem gambling prevention and treatment program in Northeast Iowa. Services are available to residents of a 2-county area that includes Delaware and Dubuque Counties.
Am I a problem gambler?
For most people, gambling can be a way to have fun. For others, however, gambling can lead to personal and financial problems. According to the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), almost 1.8 million adult Iowans gambled during the past 12 months; of that number, an estimated 8,000 adult Iowans could be classified as pathological gamblers in the past 12 months.
People are encouraged to have the conversation about gambling with those they care about. “We know the majority of Iowans who gamble do so because it’s fun and they don’t have any problems as a result of it,” said Eric Preuss of the of the IDPH Office of Problem Gambling Treatment and Prevention. “But studies show 16 percent or 369,000 adult Iowans are classified as ‘at risk’ gamblers - meaning they may have one or more symptoms of problem gambling.”

Prevention services
- Educational programs for community groups that explore the issues surrounding legalized gambling
- Programming for groups that discuss no-risk/low-risk guidelines for responsible gambling
The program is designed for the individual who:
- Is experiencing an increase in the size or frequency of bets
- Goes gambling with increasing frequency
- Gambles to win back what he/she has lost (known as chasing)
The program is designed for the family member who:
- Is worried about their loved one's gambling activities
- Doesn't know what to do next.
